I'm not too sure I like that they're removing capability from the Start menu.

I agree but I also think that it's about time Microsoft does something like this. I thought the same thing as you when I heard the announcement but I also think it is something that should be done. Android and Amazon have both done the same already but the true credit goes to Apple, the organization that really brought this cool and beneficial change to this industry to life. The nice thing of having this for Windows is that a still large majority of people use Windows.

I've known about it too. I just thought that with the keynote's publicity it would be a good time to ask this question.

Why? Just because it's Windows?
Now your apps can have an even greater potential of reaching a bigger and more diverse audience.

We shouldn't be turning out phones into computers, and computers into phones.

This is something I've loved about the linux distros for ages.
yum, apt, totally awesome.
the gui's made it even nicer
then the app interfaces like Ubuntu created are even cooler with reviews and the sort.
If done right, it can be super fucking cool.
The only difference is that apps in a Windows app store, or in the existing OSX app store, aren't generally free (though some free ones exist). The only thing I wouldn't like is if they required the app store (e.g. iphone).

Basically it's not going to turn into a community collaboration of useful/fun things, it's going to turn into another way for companies to sell you something.

*nixland has had on-demand application installation for a good while. Apple just made it seem trendy and charged you $$ for it. REVOLUTIONARY.
