Hello all.

I am currently investigating the compatibility issues between web browsers and would greatly appreciate it if you could answer this poll as I'm trying to gather information for my final year project.

I don't think that nowadays you can actually aim your designs at just one browser. As so many people are using each of them, compatibility with all is a necessity.

That's exactly what I am hoping my investigation will highlight.

Basically I'm hoping it will show such a variation in what people use (which is as you correctly mentioned and currently another poll is matching) and then compare it to what web designers aim at.

So I can develop a conclusion and possibly even a solution.

Well, I guess that since I test my sites with Chrome, I develop for Chrome.

I do try to make it look the same across all browsers, but like I said, I try for Chrome because I use it.

I aim my websites at Google Chrome users because I think a lot of people are using it these days, and the number is increasing. I have Chrome and IE8 pinned to my taskbar, and IE is almost totally neglected. If everyday Windows users were given both browsers pre-installed, I'm confident they would be using Chrome.

Hmm as this seems to already be creating some interest, would it benefit you guys if when I'm done with my project and it has been marked(which will be between late may and July to avoid any issue with uni)if I submit the results for this poll and my results for what my other poll shows people are currently using?

If so let me know and I'll make a note and do this when possible.

I usually design for FF & Safari (which has the same engine as Chrome) and fix up IE afterwards. if I want to exclude IE (sometimes I do that for admin panel stuff) I use XHTML.

Yeah if any of you are wondering why I haven't got Safari or other browsers I was advised to pick only four so I picked four of the five most popular browsers, the only reason I didn't pick Safari is because of what Dormilich said about it using the same engine as Chrome.

I got my preference for FF, since I’m better versed with Firebug than Chrome/Safari dev tools.

I aim it at what the design ought to look like. If I need to use things that do not work in IE then usually I can get away with that, as long as it does not take away from the functionality of the site. For the rest of the browsers, as long as the code is neat then unless I am testing out a brand new css property or something then chances are they will all work pretty well.

I often do extensive browser testing. I charge extra for IE < 9 usually but if there is a big problem in one of the other browsers then it is my own fault and I don't want that going down on my reputation!

I should note it is not because I want the client to pay more, but rather it puts most of them off (coding for older versions of IE tends to make the code look horrid) so only those that really need it perfect on the legacy browsers will actually pay for it. Of course, usually my code will work with 7 and over anyway but I never make any guarantee.

I can see why you would do that, I've had the fortunate experience of coding for older version of IE... it's so great.
