SSH, Remote Hosts, Stuff

Posted 13 January 2012 - 08:45 AM

Experimenting with Perl, I'd like to connect to a remote host and check to see if they have specific directories and files. After some googling and reading, it seems like SSH is the protocol I should be using, right? Does anyone have a good book or website, blog, article that could point me in the right direction (regarding SSH, protocols in general...)

THanks!

regarding SSH, consider it a "remote CLI" (something like remote desktop, only on command line). essentially, once you have the connection running, itís the same as if you would sit in front of the host computer.

if itís just directories and files available over TCP (i.e. not outside web root), you could also look into cURL or sockets.

The SSH server is usually only running on Linux servers, so unless you are communicating to a Linux host, it may not be the right method to use. I would recommend installing a FTP server and using SFTP instead, which is encrypted and cross-platform.

If the server is running SSH, it already comes with a SFTP server. So you can download a SFTP client such as FileZilla and connect to it using SFTP to see what is there before you code.
