.PNG's in IE and Firefox

Post icon  Posted 11 April 2007 - 12:41 PM

I've been working on a design for a website and I'm having trouble. In internet explorer, PNG's appear to be darker. Is there a way to fix this or should I just use another file type. I attached a file showing the errors. Please help.

i would switch to a different filetype if your layout allows you.

ie6 probably won't even render your png's,
and ie 7 still has issues at this point.

i'm not fully up to date on the status of ie7 support,
but i know that any kind of transparency in your png would fail in ie6.

not sure if there is a fix for it, and if there is, i am betting its buggy too.

Yeah, I too just ran into some PNG problems last night; IE6 won't render the alpha channel .. The solution? JPG. =(

IE can render pngs you just need a fix,

I use them all the time.

http://homepage.ntlw...ola/pngtest.htm

Its not that IE6 can’t see the image has a alpha it just doesn’t apply it.....

So this just rewrites the image and apply the alpha using a function written by MS themselves

Hope this helps.

We actual wrote one for our company but I cant give the source code out company property and all that... but ours combines the best of both types of png fixes to make it work with background pngs, normal inline image and rolloverstate images with no problems

but have a look a round there is plenty out there.

This really should be far more common knowledge. I found out this technique recently for use on a client's site, having been told time and time again that alpha PNGs won't run on IE6; the AlphaImageLoader has (I think) been around since IE5. It really throws the doors wide open since fully layered and blended fluid graphical layouts are possible with cross-browser support.
