Am trying to install wget using yum on my CentOS server.

[root@localhost ~]# yum install wget
Loaded plugins: fastestmirror
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-3, 'Temporary failure in name resolution')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base

When I try to ping google, I get:

[root@localhost ~]# ping www.google.com
ping: unknown host www.google.com

My /etc/resolv.conf file is as follows:

option rotate
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
search localdomain

After every change I made sure to restart networking service.

I have tried several different nameservers, have retyped the file, and I have no idea what to do now. I have gone through several pages of google results, but none of the solutions worked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What is your default route?

Why are manually editing /etc/resolv.conf if this machine uses DHCP? If it does not use DHCP, then can you ping other items on the network? Can other items ping this machine?

My route is:

Kernel IP routing table
Destination     Gateway         Genmask         Flags Metric Ref    Use Iface
192.168.1.64    *               255.255.255.192 U     0      0        0 eth0
169.254.0.0     *               255.255.0.0     U     0      0        0 eth0

I can ping other computers in this network, and other computers can ping this one.

However, as soon as I ping anything outside the network, even the external ip address of my network, I get: connect: Network is unreachable
