Hey everybody,

I've been experimenting with wirtualization software lately (virtualbox in particular), and I was wondering... do any of you use virtualization software (such as virtualbox and VMware)? If so, why do you use it?

By the way, I use virtualbox for the simple reason of that its free. I also likes its interface and its huge amount of customisability. I think it's fun to experiment with the different settings provided by the program.

[*]I strongly suggest installing VMware or some other virtualization technology on your development PC so you can create a couple virtual computers for testing. This would allow you to debug and test inside: WinXP32, XP64, Vista, Win7x32, Win7x64... etc. without having to actually have 5 physical PC's. Visual Studio will let you send the debug directly into one of these virtual machines so you can watch it operate, check its variables, see the crashes and so on just as if it were debugging on your real machine.

That is my entire install

My actual every-day machine is a VM. My pc runs a very lean OS with just anti-virus, OS, drivers and VMwareWorkstation. It isolates my everyday machine from network hacking, as well as giving me lots of backup capability. My VM can reboot to the last saved config each time and so on. Its really nice to test on pristine OS installs each and every time without having to either re-install or try to un-install parts and be sure they are all removed.

This is particularly handing with testing. I can install a test application and test. Upon reboot the OS is clean as if I never did the install. That way I can ensure every time that the setup.exe includes all the parts it needs.

My everyday development system is Debian running on a Mac through VMware Fusion. In addition, the software which our team is developing is centered around the virtualization of servers.

Parallels. Had some options VMWare and VirtualBox didn't have when I first was hunting around for it and stuck with it since. Also every review I read at the time from those who tried both (Parallels vs VMWare) were in favor of Parallels.

Use VmWare on my Mac for Linux while doing some Shell Scripting or Perl,

Windows when i doing some VB..

I also have it running on a old Computer Running a File Server and a Print Server on it. which is handy
