[Currently] What is the best gaming desktop?

Posted 04 February 2012 - 11:08 AM

I'm in the market. I've been a console man for years and I want explore the PC scene.

I'm looking at the new Alienware desktop they put out: http://www.dell.com/...are-x51/pd.aspx

Preparing for that Diablo 3.

I've always been a fan of Falcon Northwest computers..

It's always good to have a budget number out there....

Are you going prebuilt or are you able to build your own?

If you build your own you'll save a bunch of money. All you have to do is plug one wire into another one, it's real easy.

I've heard good things from ibuypower. If I every buy a machine prebuilt, it'll be from them.

I just purchased parts from TigerDirect. I'm building my own now. I saved so much money getting virtually the same parts that come in the same gaming PCs that AlienWare puts out to build on my own.

well, how about 3 580 GTXs in SLI, intel i7-3960X extreme, a shit-ton of ram, like 8 OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS spliced into 1 uber fast drive, a sound blaster, and a really awosome water cooling rig plus a massive case iwht a bunch of massive fans. add in 3 2560 x 1600 30' mointers, a Razer Mamba, a Razer tarantula, and huge sound system.

ya, Id give that a 2/10 :P

In realaity, it depends what you can get the best price for. When I was planning my rig I would change the design quite frequently untill I eventully felt I was getting the most for my money and I bought it.

'good value' and 'pre-built gaming machines' NEVER go together. The only reason for buying pre-built is if you want the case that they use.

honestly, just build your own or pay $100* for someone to do it for you.

*honestly, just do it yourself.

EDIT: ps, when speccing gaming machines, you MUST state the resolution you will be playing at.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say if I had the disposable income, I would buy a pre built, even if it's 200$ more. They are well put together and look fantastic. I think Alienware has the ones with the nice cooling system and layout right? Worth it! :)

Having said that I do use my own built machine, but I would have bought a pre built if I had the money.

Not to mention they have warranties and junk so there's less of a headache replacing parts if something goes tits up.

ya but I have spare parts on hand so even if something breaks I can be back up in no time. it's far more of a hassle to ship your whole computer off(rather than just 1 part which can be temporally replaced)

Meh.. but if I am not a hardware monkey, and this is my first foray into pc gaming, that might not be the case.. I would assume op has a 'regular' computer he uses for email, web browsing, and pr0n collecting - but this would be a separate beast.
