Hey guys. I have been doing some freelance work with various web development tasks. I am very good with PHP/MySql, Javascript, AJAX, web frameworks and CMS like Joomla, but it seems that most of the jobs out there require some sort of design to go along with it. I really wish I could be creative enough to design websites, but everytime I try to learn I produce mediocre html layouts that look like they could be done by someone in middle school. Is there any chance of me being successful without the design skills most jobs need? I really enjoy the programming part and I am pretty good with that too. Thanks for any comments on this post! I am really curious.

Do you need to be good at website design to be a successful freelancer

Definitely! I'm a web developer (front-end) with no design experience
Don't get me wrong, people can be awesome at both, but I prefer to specialise in the development.

Most people are better at one rather than the other. The way I have got around it, being a front end developer, is working directly with designers rather that getting clients myself. You could get clients then get designers to do the work for you, but generally the designers will be asking the clients a lot of questions, so it is best left to them.
