Hey guys, I'm considering downloading (legitimately off iTunes) Mac OSx Lion and installing it on a spare 2.5" 500GB hard drive I have, then chucking it into my spare laptop (Toshiba L300D (it's old, but I love it)). Would this be worth it since I am going to be mainly programming in Java and doing the occasional database design? Or should I just stick to Ubuntu (I have to use it because my Windows partition had a bit of a hissy and crashed)?
Mac OS Lion.

Umm...don't think OS X will run on a Toshiba L300D? Even if it did, it's in violation of the Apple License Agreement.

What about installing it on a 3.5" HDD and using it in my testbench?

Installing OSX on a non-apple computer is called making a hackintosh which is against their ToS.

As everyone else said, its against terms. Even then, it won't work as Mac OS have specific hardware compatibility requirements. Not just any hardware would run it.

...indeed.
It has to have an apple sticker on it and be made of aluminum and cost 2x as much as any other standard hardware. I see where you're coming from.
If it can run Windows 7 it can easily run Mac, just not legally. It's not a hardware issue and mac hardware is not superior from "windows" hardware.

When I looked into it last, you had to have very specific hardware parts in order to build a Hackintosh. It wasn't a case of easily running it at all. You had to choose the right hardware, then you had to run the right installers and hacks to allow you to boot and install OSX.
