Re: What are you working on today?

Just got an awesome email from one of our CAD guys. Side note: I love how CAD guys tend to think that because they've looked at XML files before and have even done a little Excel scripting, that they could easily come up and do a developer's job too.</sidenote> Basically, this guy was trying to add markups to a PDF, and he got a server communication error. No biggie, because the markup software keeps a local copy of the markups, so even if a save didn't go through, the changes would be retained locally. But instead of diagnosing or contacting us, he just kept trying to work on it, losing his changes, and starting over, until eventually the server's XML file was corrupted and replaced his local one. So he emails us and says "fix it". Fine dude, no worries, I'll take a look. A few hours later, I email him back and say it's most likely not gonna happen. I'll ask some people who have been around a lot longer than me, but don't hold your breath. I have WAY too much shit to do to be digging around on the servers looking for a markup file identifiable only by GUID. Fast forward to this morning: he HAS to know ASAP if I can do this, because he has a deadline. So, after talking to my coworker (who is incidentally out on maternity leave), I confirm for him that I can't. I just tell him that the file is corrupt, and I have no way of knowing how to fix it, if I even could. His reply was a fairly long, somewhat detailed, and yet still very incomplete and misguided attempt at explaining XML to me, and telling me what I needed to do. That came in this morning: I haven't replied yet, because I haven't managed to craft a reply that hasn't told him to go fuck himself by the second sentence yet. Did I mention that I hate support?

Dear Sir: As I said in my previous email, your data is lost. Sorry we couldn't help you. In future, please contact us immediately if a problem of this sort arises, so we can prevent data loss of this kind.
Best,
h4nnib4l

EDIT: ...but use your actual name.

I don't see a single "fuck you" in that entire reply. I feel like it's a bit disingenuous, you know?

But, I suppose I like my job...

That's the beauty of it. It's all "fuck you", all the way through. And he'll know it, but there's nothing he can do.

It seems I've been too loosey-goosey with my hours last week. Gotta start cracking back down and getting my spreadsheet knocked back in line. *sigh*

Well, after getting a call from much higher up, I ended up having to investigate the problem more deeply and realized that he had lost like 60 hours of work, 20 of which was unpaid overtime. So I guess I understand being a little pissed in general during the communication process. So, I just figured out how to save the day, and he came all the way to our dark little corner and thanked me personally. See, I'm learning to get along with people.

You know it's a pretty grim bug when you tell your co-worker about it and he vomits.

That's the sort of day I'm having.

I'm looking around on documents on ASP and seeing how I can do this with no knowledge of ASP at all.

I will beat Fallout 3 before bed. It's been 2 fucking years, it's about time.

Update: Jesus Christ finally it's done! I can't believe I died though.

I'm trying to get all my homework done today so I can play fallout 3 when I get back home tonight, and so that I can eat at the Vortex (Atlanta's famous burger bar) tomorrow with my Mom.

It's okay, the zombie-fication took.

Now we just need a source of brains... difficult to find in her current locale.

Tired.. trying to gear up for the fifteen-plus inches of snow coming in tonight/tomorrow. I think tomorrow's "working from home" is going to be "video training day". Just like high school. Yeah buddy.
