Ok, i'm thinking about getting a PS2. I heard the price was supposed to go down soon, anyone have any truth to that?  How much are games usually?  Does it have any probs with DVD playback? If I get a surround sound system, can I hook it up to that and have full dolby 5.1 sound? Do they make games with surround sound? What are some good games for PS2? I really like first person shooters that are like straight forward not hard to figure stuff out. I'm not a sucker for graphics, but game play must be tops. Car games are cool too, as are  stragety games like Age of Empires and Star Craft. Are GameCube's just as good? I like some of the titles i've seen on it (Star wars). Does it have DVD and surround sound and how much is it?

umm, supposedly there's gonna be like, a price war between all 3 console companies around e3 (a few weeks). i'd wait till after e3 to do anything.
games, new 50 bucks, greatest hits 20-25 depending on where you get it.
surround sound: its supported, i dont have ss though so i cant say more than that. it does have dolby 5.1, and is supported by more and more games all the time.
good games: METAL GEAR SOLID 2: SONS OF LIBERTY!!! Devil May Cry, Final Fantasy X,tony hawk 3, grand theft auto 3, zone of the enders, twisted metal black, maximo, onimusha, gran turismo 3, dark cloud.

gamecube has a lot of great games too, but no dvd, and its 200 bucks, but like i said, wait till after e3.

i hear that they are cutting down to 200 bucks because Sony is bringing out the one with Hard drive in it, cause of FFXI, i would just wait for those cause if you buy on for 200 its 100 bucks for the hard drive anyway, and they are making all the new games work off it, or so i hear.

i just read yesterday that they arent going to reduce the price until later this year... maybe... i guess that their sales are as good as they were a year ago so no real need for a price cut yet...

the standard GameCube does not support DVDs, however i believe there is another version of the GameCube (a panasonic thing) that has a DVD player on it  (im sure its much more expensive).

i've heard from many people that the gamecube isn't anywhere near PS2's capability, but, if you're going to get anything and if the price is reasonable, then everyone i've talked to has suggested X-Box...but, yeah, i've heard GameCube isn't worth the money. I personally think PS2 is, but i haven't met anyone that agrees w/ me thus far... and if/when i get X-Box, i'll let ya' know about quality in games and stuff 'cause from the way it sounds, it seems like you and i have mostly the same taste in games (talking to neo)

i have a ps2 and personally i would still buy it over the xbox....i love it...even after having it for over a year....
i never liked nintendo and sega when playstation came out PHwoAr now that was some serious gaming ! then when ps2 came out no doubt in my mind....then this xbox hype seeing the adds and all i was like WoW xbox sounds cool, but i played it and YUCK ! no thank you ill stick to my ps2 thank you very much.

anyway definately buy a ps2 u wont regret it...

Okay, here's my opinion.  As slothy said, wait until after e3.  All the companies will probably do some price drops.  As of what to get, I would definetly say PS2 over everything.

GameCube doesn't even compare to PS2, plus it can't play DVDs or CDs...unless you want to pay EXTRA for that piece of shit add-on that I've only heard bad about.

X-Box is the biggest joke ever.  As I'm typing, X-Boxes are being returned because:

• They're overheating
  
• They scratch disks
  
• They've frozen
  
• People realize the games suck
  
• The controllers are just way too fucking big

Also, in order to use DVDs on your X-Box, you have to spend an additional ุ or so on this special Microsoft DVD remote that doesn't work well.

PS2, while it doesn't beat X-Box in the real of specs, totally whipes the floor.  The gaming selection is flat out fucking awesome.  Metal Gear Solid 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, and I HIGHLY recommend THAT EVERYONE buy it.  Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 is also a hella fun game, and it better than the previous 2.  Also, all the Final Fantasies and other Square RPGs will be on PS2.  Grand Theft Auto 3 also rocks.  These are just a few games that are out, so think of all the ones to come.  Also, PS2's DVD player is awesome.  You don't need any additional crap to use it.  Oh yea, and the surround sound on PS2 is da bomb!

So umm, I'm biast to PS2, so get it!

i agree w/ indie on two things... microsoft doesn't deserve to come out w/ games at all, and then PS2 games do rule:)!! tony hawk pro skater 3 is a pimpin' game and the other tony hawk games don't come close to it... but that's my two cents for tonight 'cause everything i type's starting to get blurry:(

being a person who owns all the consoles. i will have to say that Xbox is a good system, something about are not to great, and the xbox does not overheat and crap unless you bought it around christmas, cause they tried to get them out cause there was such a demand for them, gamecube is a great system, and Resident Evil rocks and looks so sexy. its not good cause like everyone else said you cant play DVDs on it, yeah thats a bad feature, but thats why its only 199 and not 299. PS2, great system, great games, but it dont have any compition to the hardware specs of the GC or the XBOX. i would have to say, go with either PS2 or XBOX, and if you are going to bitch about the controller size buy the S-Controller, its smaller cause it is a copy of the Jap. Version of the XBOX controller. and we all know Asian people got small hands. well thats my thoughts on this whole thing.

that's the most retarded thing ever. i dont think idiots who like you who post things like that should be allowed to ever touch a computer. but you still do. everyone has the right to publish games, and sell games. the thing that makes or breaks a company is good games. period.

and blunted, lets see, you own all 3, and two of them have dvd players. why the fuck would you want ANOTHER machine to play dvd's? gamecube, is a GAMING system, such the name GAMEcube. i dont even think the dvd thing should be brought up in a convo about games. :yes:
