Interesting that not a single person thinks training courses are of any use.

Training courses usually cost money and why pay when you have the internet with millions of tutorials and guides?

For the qualifications? Or because your employer is paying for it?

Apart from university I've not taken any training courses (although work want me to take a Sharepoint development one at some point), as you rightly say there is plenty of stuff available online. Just struck me a little odd that no-one at all thought they were useful.

The training courses do get you qualifications and employers do send their employees to these courses but I find that it's mostly to learn technologies like Zend, CakePHP, etc... I may be wrong but the majority of people don't learn the actual language at a training course.

Run. Pick up what you need and go. Fight your way out if you have to, but go. Remember that shots to the body will only slow them down. Good luck.

(sorry, I've had bad sharepoint experiences recently)

So, a bit of a necro here but other than QuakeNet#PHP(per Dormilich) I haven't found any decent tutorials. what tutorials would you recommend?

edit:
the finer points of English elude the guy that wrote QuakeNet but I'm not exactly one to complain. presumably he is Germen given he offers the tutorial in both languages. still, the information seems good.

I started with w3schools (which is horrible, might I add) and it didn't work out. I decided to take what I learned and try to make a website with a working login, register, and everything else that a simple website would need.

As I ran into problems I would google solutions. Here I am today.

I am still a bit of a noob at php as my recent posts indicate. I started ith w3, which I have to admint is not very good and then strectched out to search engines, DIC and books. I think I have bought abot 10 or so books on different php topics. One of the best I have run across is 'PHP Objects, Patterns, and Practice' by Matt Zandstra. It doesn't teach the language basics, but is all about OOP and using perterns in php. The patterns he introduces are some of the basics from the old gang of four book. I am finding it very usefull.
