Hi, I am involved in two projects that are related to HTML5 and I'm a little confused on something. I have done research and from what I'm finding they don't think it will be released for a few more years so how reliable is it?

The OP is correct, HTML5 will not be officially released as a the recommended spec for quite a few years. However, if you do not use it then browsers will not bother supporting it (and most modern browsers do support a lot of the spec) and we will get no where. Therefore, unless your site critically has to work flawlessly for everyone, then just use html5... I have been since 2009 (css3 too).
