Is Lua Viable for *Creating* A Game?

Posted 25 February 2012 - 06:49 PM

As some of you may know, a company named Oxeye Studios recently became (relatively) famous for their game Cobalt, which is created in Lua.

It's a 2D platformer, and it runs quite well (even in Alpha). Since I really like the Lua language (even more so than my other favorite, Java) I was then wondering if it were viable to create a game in Lua.

If so, how would you suggest I begin?
I'm relatively competent in Lua, so that wont be a problem.

Thank you!

What did you use? Love2d for that?

I think 2d might be okay but if you want 3d you'll need to find something a bit more suited for that mode and also is fairly accepting of lua. It's do able.. Some game called 'w0w' does that, or so I hear.

No, I didn't make Cobalt (it's a fantastic game though). I was just mentioning that others had used Lua to create it.

And for now I just want to do 2D, so I can check out Love2D.

Also, could I use lets say, LuaGL for 2D? (more of an OpenGL question than a Lua question)

Sorry - I thought I read you made a game in addition to playing cobalt.. doi to me.

@LuaGL - Sure.. I don't see why not. If openGL can do a 2d game then LuaGL should be able to as well!

Alright, time to try for the [insert giant number here]th time to actually set it up.

I'll be back (in another topic (unless it pertains to the OP)) if I have any more specific questions!
