Could you all help me with the types of file extensions I would need?
I know the following:
.gif files are used for partial transparency, but the Image can only have whole transparency or no transparency.
Anyone know the Image file extension that supports partial transparency? The reason I ask this is cause I want to apply shadows to some objects, but gif images dont do the job, and since jpg doesnt support any transparency, i can't use that at all. Or am I wrong? Here's the types of image file formats i know of(I use paint.net, and i know there are several types of file extensions i can use)
.png
.bitmap
.gif
.jpg
and thats it. I need partial transperency as ive said, something like an image that supports opacity. If im not making any sense, please tell me so i can reword my question.

png's are great at dealing transparency, and it's generally what I use when dealing with image files.

Ok thanks! I'll try using pngs then! didnt expect to get this much replies so fast. But am i right about the other file formats? And Am i correct when i say pngs take up more memory than jpgs and gifs? Not that it matters, but its just kinda interesting that ive missed pngs and yet im constantly making graphics!

Well yeah at the base level - if PNGs hold things that JPGs don't (transparency) or compress to kill quality like GIFs then it would go without without saying that the files would be bigger. More information = bigger file.

Yea I kinda figured. So I know im continuing this topic, but i promise one more thing. Is it true then that pngs hold opacity? So something can be sorta see through but also at the sae time, not really? I know gifs cant, and i know jpgs cant. I guess more than anything, im just clarrifying, sory about that.
Never mind, question answered. Looks like im using pngs! ok thanks everyone!

Yes.. PNGs hold transparency and opacity.
Just as a side note - you said you have paint.net... why what was stopping you from trying this out in the first place? Scribble a square down on a layer.. slap a Gaussian blur to big enough to make it semi transparent.. clear the background later... save as png, gif, and jpg... see what happens. That or just draw something on a layer, double click, change the opacity to like 120, make sure the background is clear, and save to png, jpg, or gif. Two minutes of experimentation would have led you to the same answers.

Yea i know, im sorry, but at the same time im at school, so i was a little bored, and do not have paint.net here, so i thought i might as well ask something to answer my question:p. Again, im sorry, i know i took the lazy way out, but at the same time, ive learned things that i dont know if experimentation would have told me. (It's mostly that article that the other guy posted). Still, thanks everyone!
