System Admin role

Posted 28 February 2012 - 08:57 AM

Hi there, I would like to know your opinions on what is the first steps to become a system admin. I would like to know server technologies, operating systems - preferably Linux/Unix based, but not that much of networking side...maybe more of scripting side to add too. My background is Oracle databse systems, some Java programming and knowledge of Microsoft OS. I just need to make a decision what to do at first, what certificates to attain for good start to pursue career later in this field. So far I am undergraduate 3rd Year Computer Science student looking at opportunities ahead. Thank you!

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Well, I took the unix systems administration course my university offers, and most of that is basically networking, security, and general setup.

I would recommend that you make sure you know security, LDAP (or another networked filesystem), nmap, netstat, iptables, ssh, chroot, and more through and through (I expect those are the most/ more common things you will need to work with).

Additionally, networking will likely be important as I expect a lot of your job will be setting up, configuring, and maintaining network stability.

Not 100% sure though, sys admin isn't exactly my area...

Sys Admin or Pizza Maker, getting a job is pretty much the same formula:

Look at the "help wanted" ads for the job you want.
What are the 'requirements', and what are the 'preferred skills'?
That tells you where to aim your studies.

Whatever job you have now, do 150% at it. Be the employee nobody wants to loose and everyone wants to hire. Live a good work ethic. That means show up for you 8:00am shift at 7:30. It does not mean show up at 7:55 then get coffee, chat-up the secretary, take a shit, situate your belongings and start working 8:30. Work all the way 5:00, then pack up. Don't close down at 4 and take an hour to get to your personal life in order. Lead by example, even if you aren't the leader - YET.

If you are someone people WANT, they will overlook a lot of holes in your resume because you can always learn new information. But nobody wants to have to train their employees to act professional and like adults.
