Raspberry Pi

Posted 29 February 2012 - 12:27 AM

You probably already know that at 6am today the R-Pi went on preorder (completely unexpected)!

Quote

Six years after the project's inception, we’re nearly at the end of our first run of development – although it’s just the beginning of the Raspberry Pi story. Now we start developing educational tools and initiatives, at the same time as continuing research and development on Raspberry Pi hardware.

Although we are still waiting for units to arrive from China, you can start buying the Raspberry Pi today. We have entered into licensed manufacture partnerships with two British companies, Premier Farnell and RS Components. They’ll be manufacturing and distributing the devices on behalf of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, and handling the distribution of our first batches as they arrive in the country. The Foundation continues to make a small profit from each Raspberry Pi sold, which we’ll be putting straight back into the charity.

Any of you get lucky? Nothing here so far, they managed to crash RS and Farnell!

This is pretty cool. I'd love making a semi-intelligent CNC machine, or an autonomous quadrotor, out of one (or two) of these, to say nothing about making a 'smart' house with one for less than 30 bucks for the computer.

I bought one, missed the initial batch, but preordered from the supplier. Although it won't be delievered until the end of April :( Still, it is a cool and inexpensive toy.

The ordering was b/s... I am frumpy and annoyed. Perhaps their retailers shouldn't be running their servers on raspberry pi'es.

It's something nice I would have liked to have, but they sold out so fast plus 35 bucks is depressing more than I can spend on something I'd end up using once.

Poor lil' fellers... they can't catch a break!

The Raspberry Pi foundation has suffered a production setback that could delay delivery of the organization's $35 Linux computer. The manufacturer accidentally used ethernet jacks without integrated magnetics, built-in transformers that provide DC-isolation and help filter noise.

The wrong jacks have been soldered to the Raspberry Pi boards and will have to be removed and replaced before the product can ship to end users. According to the foundation, the ethernet jacks are relatively easy to replace. The problem is that sourcing a sufficient quantity of the right ethernet jacks might take some time.

Allegedly they are shipping now...

Who is getting one, and are you aware you are required to post photos of it when you get it?

Has anyone gotten theirs?

An interesting article here, First Steps with the Raspberry Pi, takes you through a good base level fun. (Intro, benchmarks, project ideas, software, etC)

Did anyone ever pick one of these up? It sounds like some hard working soul made a SNES-Adapter.
