[Apple] Mountain Lion summer release

Posted 29 February 2012 - 02:28 AM

I was surfing and stoppped by the Apple website and found their new "baby"..

The new OSX Mountain Lion -- Sneak Peak right HERE

I guess they decided to upgrade the "old" Lion that for me was pretty good I must admit...
They show a small clip on the sneak peak, it gives you just a hint of what you might find in the new Version, but I really dont know if it deserved to be called A "NEW OSX"...

By that I also mean that I'm affraid that my MacBook Air ( DualCore) can't support the new Mountain Lion.

Here is some of the stuff thy added for those who don't wanna go check the site.

  • iCloud
  • Messages [Beta version is available for mac users]
  • Reminders
  • Notes
  • Notification Center
  • Share Sheets
  • Twitter
  • GameCenter
  • AirPlay
  • Mirroring
  • Gatekeeper

oh...almost forgot...
There is also a a beta version called "Mountain Lion for developers" available for app developers...

Heh, I just upgraded to Lion this past weekend after I got a new MBP from work with it, so I added it to my personal (old) MBP. Nothing compelling in Mountain Lion for me where I don't use an iPad, as the focus seems to be on cross-product integration. Some neato features though :)

That was my thought! I guess they are trying to transform the OSX in something more "Ipadi" and "iPhoni" with messages ,game center, notes...but I think I might give it a try...(if they ask $10 for it) :chinese:

Having Messages on a desktop could be nice. Handy to send text message to family iPhones from a full keyboard. (Though we've been doing that through Google Voice for a bit now)

iCloud: I'm still unhappy about all the lost features from iDisk, that I used for years. It doesn't serve any purpose for me. I like things I own on my computer and I sync with a cable.

A centralized Notification Center might be nice though.

Notes could be handy, but I already have Pages on all my devices.

All up, I'm not really sure its an OS upgrade. Most of these things are applications.

And yet something lots of people have been asking for is still missing: The ability to organize iBooks with folders/categories. I have lots of books on my iPad and I'd like to keep the mystery novels separate from the C# text books. I finally just quit using iBooks for my books, Photos for photos or Video for videos and do it all Documents Pro. It lets me organize everything plus put the iPad on the WiFi network as a server for direct drag-and-drop management.

Messages could be fun, we all know someone who has an iPhone but still, that could just be an app like the beta version they they released...

and 2OSx in less then one year? not that sure that it's worth the money for just some new app's, but well summer is far away..who knows what they will create until there!
And I agree with tlhIn`toq, they should better rework some of those apps like iBooks that deserve more attention..

For the iDisk, I don't know because I've never used it, but iCloud seems pretty fair to me, sure I prefer to allways have my files with me but so much as contacts and RDV and backup your iPhone and Ipad i think it's pretty good.

Windows 8 is doing the exact same thing, it's being optimized for touch screen computers. The whole main menu looks like a Windows Mobile device. At least that was the case when I checked the beta that was released 4 months ago(?).

OS X will not be optimized for touch screens. It will get more IOS-like in some ways, but touch screens on a laptop/desktop make no sense so there's no need for that in OS X.

You say that, and yet that's what they're doing. It seems like many of the major OS's (Windows, Apple, and even Ubuntu) are more and more focusing on the tablet market than the powerful desktop. W8 is heavily tablet-inspired. OSX is getting more and more iOS features, and while they may not be prepping for a fully-touch interface, it's still being designed around a different philosophy, like gesture control and fullscreen applications. Ubuntu's default interface is Unity. Why is the trend going this way? Probably because they're predicting a real shift in the way people use computers. We'll have to wait and see.

Yes, it's getting more gestures, but that's different from touch screens. A touch screen is just silly on anything bigger than a tablet and they're not going there, ie: No MBP, iMac, or Mini with a touch screen. Gestures will be very similar with the track pad and mouse but not identical to the iPhone/iPad. This is part of why Apple is not trying to develop one OS to run on both platforms the way Microsoft is. They see it as a dead end.

The messages beta has been out for a while now if anyone wants to test it. It's okay but a bit fiddly and needs some improvement.

Obviously you've never worked heavily in autocad, half the lighting programs I use. Nor have you worked with professional audio management software.

:wow:
Right. I'm sure holding your arms up 8 hours per day to manipulate information on a 30" display is completely different in Autocad than it is in any other application. The fact that it's Autocad magically makes your arms lighter.
