Dude, there have to be at least 50 threads on here for "What's the best distro?"

See that search bar at the top right of the web page?

mint IS ubuntu technically, it's based on the ubuntu code-base and attaches to the ubuntu repository.

That is unless you get the debian version of mint which follows a different release cycle.

Seriously though, Java is designed to run in the java vm, this allows it to be independent of machine for the most part (unless you want to connect into machine specific stuff). Ubuntu may give you a few issues if you want to use the latest Java because Ubuntu supplies the OpenJDK library instead of Oracle's JDK. But this doesn't mean you can't use Oracle's on it, it just means it's not in the repository. I personally just go and download Oracle's version and install it myself (it's not really that hard, google that shit).

Pick a distro that WORKS FOR YOU, then start developing Java on it. I highly doubt most of the distros out there are going to hinder your Java development, with the exception of only supplying OpenJDK through their repos... in which case, if you a) don't like OpenJDK and B) can't handle removing it and installing Oracle's JDK... well, you probably need more experience with Linux.

Several distros exist not because one is better than the other. Several distros exist because everyone has different tastes in what makes a distro better. So asking us is going to get you nowhere!

I know it's fashionable to complain about stuff that other people like, but you should probably have a reason for it when you do. Just because a lot of smart people whine about particular tools doesn't mean it's smart to pick tools and whine about them.

If you're going to complain about Ubuntu, and someone asks what the problem is, you should have an answer. It's possible that someone out there has a solution for you.
