Where to start with Python...

Posted 10 March 2012 - 10:07 AM

Hey guys, I was just wondering if you guys could give me an idea on how to start programming in Python, I'm already fairly advanced in several other languages, but I was wondering what I'd need to start programming in Python at home. I mainly want to use it for web applications etc.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks.

Get hold of some quality text-books on Python. Never depend on web-tutorials, they can only complement, but never suffice. A good beginner's book would be the book Core Python Programming in Addison Wesley series, or the Programming Python by Mark Lutz in Oreilly (it has excellent coverage of the procedural part, but starts rather hurriedly on OOP). In order to learn to optimize algorithms in Python, a good book would be the book Python Algorithms by Magnus Lie Hetland in the Apress series, or Data Structures and Algorithms Using Python by Rance D. Necaise in the Wiley Series.

I just meant how to go about using the language, in a web environment?

But those books could come in handy, thanks :)

It is not advisable to start using Python for web-programming before coming to grips with the language itself. Python is an amazingly powerful language, to harness its full strength in any field, whether web-programming or shell-scripting, you have to first master the language. And I don't know about others, but I would master networking as well before venturing into web-programming.

I'm already very competent in PHP, I've designed and written several systems for companies. I was just wondering on how I would go about using Python instead. I've heard that it's very efficient and just a great language in general.
