Now I've grown a new hatred for this country that is causing me to desire fleeing the country as soon as possible ...

Woah woah woah woah... don't be fucking stupid. You can't even leave the state & your gonna do the 'I hate the USA & I'm moving where the grass is greener' dance? Fuck you. People die to come to this country & they make a wonderful living working their ass off because this country affords them opportunity that they can't find anywhere else. People risk death to come to this country, start a business, go to school, & all the other things they can do here because they can. They work their asses off.

No one in America is guaranteed anything. You have to succeed to rise above, & there are many that don't simply because they don't have what it takes. Without losers there wouldn't be winners.

Let me hold the door for you on your way to Canada.... *waves good bye*

Can you write? Come to Boston and do a tech writing certificate. With your tech background, you'd be able to sail through the program at UMass Boston, and it's a pretty quick and cheap way to get yourself into a tech-sector job. The work pays pretty okay, too - certainly enough to tide you over while you finish your degree and pursue programming work, if that's what you want to do.

As for your stuff, you can do what you want, but you should know that when you're working for real, replacing all of that stuff will be very easy. Living without it for a year or two might make you realize that doing without it is even easier than replacing it. From my experience, you will never regret getting rid of an old microwave oven or a television. There are plenty more where those came from.

Just a thought, what about government housing? Apply now and then do a little time at home then GTFO!

If anything you'll have a place to live while you get your shit sorted.

Christ, woman!

Sell your shit. Transfer to Frostburg State (MD). Sleep on my couch.

You can bring the guinea pig, but I fear my dogs may not enjoy the company of your cats.

I already looked into section 8, ineligible because if I can go to school, I'm obviously a millionaire and can support myself. Lord forbid I get temporary help while I try to better myself. The only option where that's concerned is to drop out and have 6 babies while working at McDonalds. That's a rant for another day though.

Hm. I figured it'd come to this. :)

So, you've asked for advice and the advice I've seen given that seems best is:

  • Forget storage, it costs money, your stuff isn't irreplaceable. Sell what you can, donate the rest. Keep only the essentials.
  • The area you're in is the sludge at the bottom of the cesspool employment-wise. Your opportunities there will not do you anything other than maintain your miserable existence. This doesn't seem to be debatable.
  • Re-read what Jon Kipasrsky had to say. I wouldn't suggest Boston for you (given the expense of living there) but then again, it can't be worse than Dayton, Ohio. A tech writing gig may indeed be what you need to bridge from "squalor in Ohio" to "not squalor somewhere else". Even if it's not that particular idea, Jon has the correct notion. Take what skills you do have, parlay them into something that someone will pay you to do (legally anyway) and start off new elsewhere.

You also mentioned not knowing someone where you're going. That happens all the time and, quite frankly, leaving your family doesn't sound like all that bad an idea, regardless.

Understand, none of it will be easy but you need to use your head here: the prospects in Dayton are merely more of the same for you. There are no jobs, the military's budget just took a huge kick in the nads so that option is a pipe dream and your prospects there offer you nothing more than more of the same. You can work anywhere, go to school anywhere. Stick your head up and look around. Look at this entry here. Tech writer for Lockheed/Martin. You have tech skills. You've been in the military. You had to have had some kind of security clearance at WPAFB. That's something I found with a grand total of 10 seconds of half-assed looking.

Your biggest hurdle is mental. Get past the "OMG I have to leave home" part and there's lots of stuff out there you could excel at.

One last blurb (short, I promise):

Once you say to yourself, "I'm leaving and I'm never coming back", everything is easy. It's the most liberating feeling in the world. You get a fresh start- so sell everything (sell the cats, if you can!), pack your shit up, spin a bottle or throw darts at an atlas, and go somewhere new. You've already had one offer of a couch to sleep on in this thread- look into it.

Well, I didn't want her to read in between the lines and then say "hey...I could always hook".

This would definitely help in the get laid - get knocked up - have six babies - win welfare lottery path we discussed earlier.

Well, from a personal standpoint, I've never looked at getting laid as a negative. Mind you, getting paid for it would only make it that much more positive.

Hopefully though, in my case, they don't pay by a timeclock...
