Well, for what it's worth, I'm sure a sandpaper factory has a lot of turnover, it's not like you were in management or anything so as I said, if you can't give a notice for fear of losing this position in a "better" job then you have to do what is best for you. After all, not many people take a job thinking "How can I make my boss rich for the least amount of return for my labors." I'm sure that not being able to come back to this job, if needed, would be a disastrous life-altering experience at this point in your life.

If I lose this new job I'm going to be hysterical. I'll have to be locked up.

You won't. Just do the job as well as it can be done - don't listen to the "the job doesn't care about you, so don't care about the job" advice. Get in the habit of doing everything you do as if you mean it, and you'll do fine.
But remember, while you're giving full attention and effort to the job, when you get home your job is to keep on with the job hunt and making yourself a better programmer. This is not your last job, and your next job should be one that you choose, not the one that happens to take you. That means you always have a resume on someone's desk, and you're always learning.
Okay, enough lectures from me. Congratulations.

So I broke the news to the sandpaper company. They were nothing but smiles, congratulations, and encouragement. They weren't even mad that I couldn't give them the 2 weeks notice, and were happy I was leaving on good terms. I even got a ride on the golf cart thingy with my manager.
Also, did I mention that I am the first female to be hired by this company for anything other than HR? Chick power!

@Neotifa: Sloth has a vocabulary not exceeding 4 letters, but he is a good looking hunk so I will tip toe over and give him a squeeze.
There are always opportunities. I've just had a loss myself but you are a hard, umm, a tough, um, a survivor. America has support, yes, but is also the most open society to put a bomb in your crotch

Neotifa, you should have been locked up years ago.
As Mark Twain said about raising a young boy:
You put him in a barrel and feed him through the bung hole until he is
eighteen years old then......you plug the bung hole.
