2D walking animation help

Posted 16 March 2012 - 08:42 AM

Hey,
I'm currently developing a 2D top-down shooter and I want to make a walking animation for my player and enemies..
Whats the best way to do it? Maybe some examples?
Thanks...
Here is the player's sprite Posted Image

You would draw up a few frames that show the character is "walking"... when the user presses the walk button you cycle through these frames.

The trick is to find something that shows movement right? In zelda games it was one arm would be darkly colored and a few pixels in to show it's down and the other normal colored and "up"... then in the next frame that would swap.

With your image is frankly not suited for that. See the bottom of this page... notice how sprint has hands and feet that alternate positions to create a sense of movement? You need to determine something like that.

This link would show a series of frames highlighting movement. See the arms/legs are in different positions and each frame has them coming to the body then moving away?

No problem. Figure out what you want to show for movement and have your buddy redraw that. I am a little confused what that guy is supposed to be holding? A radio? For a quick fix you might have a frame where the image is one size.. the second frame the model is a bit smaller and skewed to the right.. the next frame back to the first frame then the next frame smaller and skewed to the left.. a sort of up and down / bob motion.. *shrug* I couldn't hurt.

Sure.. just remember to think about this as it moves forward.. sure right now it looks like he has to go pee or something but throw some forward movement it shouldn't be too bad.
