[link] Retired World of Warcraft Server

I found this to be an amusing post. Essentially Blizzard is selling decommissioned servers to benefit St. Judes. You get the blade, an etched plexiglass top, and a side panel explaining what realm it was running and when. A nifty look at the specs that go into your gaming pleasure.

The article is about three pages and has some run downs of the investigation on what he picked up. Plus more pretty pictures.

Quote

[...] in late 2011, Activision Blizzard began auctioning off retired server blades from the days of yore to benefit the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This was a chance to own a piece of gaming history even if, like myself, you never actually played WoW, and to add a few points to your philanthropy skill set and level up your personal character at the same time.

[...]
Activision Blizzard was upfront about the blades being sold as-is and any attempts to fire one up is at the discretion of the bidder.

If you are curious here's Blizzard's ebay profile. The auctions appear done for the moment, and the servers were running $100-300 a pop.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 1

That's pretty cool, I haven't played in years and years but I'd still be tempted if my old server (Thunderhorn) was up for grabs xD

Blizzard Warcraft Retired Server Blade Thunderhorn Realm - North America (#190597977099)
US $360.00

Though it looks like they were giving years on the plate so there might be multiple Thunderhorns over the years.

I am pretty sure the hardware's been replaced over the years.. you should be able to find the server and world name with in a given parameter of years... if you are so inclined.

Per the third page of the link:

Activision Blizzard removed all drives prior to auctioning off these servers to prevent anyone from swiping game or user-related data. Drats, foiled again!
