ASP.Net MVC

Hi all, I have no experience in web development but have been doing C# and WPF for about a year now. I want to start web dev and there is this buzz about ASP.NET MVC.I have played a little with PHP,Javascript and HTML in the past but didn't do anything serious with it,now do i need to know regular ASP.Net to understand ASP.NET MVC?

Am also shopping for a book and am thrown between

Professional ASP.Net MVC

and ASP.NET

you do not need ASP.NET to understand MVC.
MVC >>> ASP.NET since it allows for easier maintenance of code. Make sure you study MVC3.
