Well, the first step would be to dowload and install Java. You can download the installer here:
- Java SE Downloads

Once that's done, use the java command to execute your programs. - It explains itself pretty well when you execute it without parameters.

Never touched a Windows 7 system but I seriously doubt the JRE is not already installed on it

I don't believe so, pbl. It's been a while since I last installed Windows 7, but I do remember having to install the JRE before I could run any Java programs. (Netbeans is usually one of the first thing I install on a new system.)

Keep in mind that this is Microsoft we are talking about, and Java is essentially in direct competition with their own .NET framework. They're not exactly the sort of company that would willingly aid their competitors... (But then again, who is :))

Hmmm... I could be wrong I suppose. But I could swear I had to install the JRE the last time I set up Win7 on my PC.

I need to test this. Time to create another Virtual Machine :)

Maybe I misunderstood the OP's question then. The first program I installed was NetBeans, packaged with the JDK. I think there was a JRE, but I could be wrong. :)

I believe the JDK also installs the JRE, maybe different for NetBeans package though. I had to install it for Windows 7 though.

The JRE is there, if it wasn't there you wouldn't be able to play an Applet in your Internet Explorer
If you want to use Netbeans you need a JDK (not a JRE) and this not running a Java program but compiling/developping a Java program. :)

I just checked a fresh Windows 7 setup and there doesn't appear to be any JRE installed.

You can, in fact, not play an Applet in IE by default. However, I do believe it has a sort of "easy-install" thing for when Applets appear in a system without Java, where it installs it for you in a very simple manner. (Much like it does for the Flash player.)

There are different versions of Netbeans. The Java versions do, of course, need the JDK but other versions meant for languages like C++ and PHP only need the JRE to run the IDE itself. I use Netbeans for PHP development so that's the version I use. For that I need to manually install the JRE.

First, lets talk about apple and/or orange
"Installing Java" you mean JRE or JDK ?

Applet do not run in browser or AppletViewer ?

Have you read the post on how to enable Java in IE ?

In regards to Java support in browsers, you'd only need the runtime. (Which you probably know better than most. Myself included :)). That's what that link refers to when it says "Installing Java".

I don't know what an AppletViewer is (a desktop app to view Applets?) but Applets in browsers do require the JRE.

I've checked already and Windows 7 does not include the JRE. IE does not run Applets without it, regardless of how it's configured. If a website contains a Java Applet, IE will show you a dialog where it tells you you need to install Java, and if more info is requested it takes you to this page, where you are given instructions on how to install the JRE from the java.com site. (Even though the page says it only covers IE7 and IE8, this is what you get in IE9 as well, and the install procedure is the same.)

Edit:
As an afterthought... The first step in those instruction is: "Open Internet Explorer by clicking ... . - Which seems odd, seeing as this is a web-page, presumably already open in IE :P

alti +1 pbl -1. Never though Microsoft would go so low.

At least your link answers the OP question :^:.

JRE was included in all previous versions of Windows.
I'll call my brooker to sale 100 thousand Microsoft shares first thing tomorrow morning :)
