Don't take everything at face value.

Since a lot of people here think highly of this series, would it be better to read the books first?

Yes. There's a lot more symbolism and detail that the show couldn't possibly tackle that makes it all the better.

I highly recommend reading the books first. It will make you appreciate all the scenes that they put in the show a lot more. Plus, you get a lot better feel for the characters in the books.
It will take some time to read all the books, though. They are hefty buggers.

Also, don't get attached to the characters. They all die. However, if Jon or Dany dies I'm ragequitting the series. I'm going to go all Misery on his ass [insert lulz-you-look-like-kathy-bates-anywaysjoke by supersloth here]. I'm 2/3 of the way through ASOS, and I just read my 3rd fav char "dying". Also, another hot guy. And his mom. That is all. I'll say no more.

Yep I'm pretty much prepared for my favorite characters to meet a tragic end. Hoping at least one of them breaks the mold, though.

Dance with Dragons ends on a shitty cliffhanger for a couple characters.

I like the books, but Amazon kind of ruined them for me. They sent me this fantastic offer to pre-order the new book, complete with a completely unavoidable two line summary of how the previous book ended
I have to say, though, Arya is a brilliant character. If she is killed at some point, that's when I stop reading.

...
I heard the 6th book should be out some time this year, or at least that's what George was saying at the book signing last summer.

Which means, it'll probably come out in 2015 or something...
Must say I agree with you Atli, Arya is one of the best female characters I have ever read and I'll probably quit the series if he kills her off. ADWD made me angry enough with its ending.

Wait, so Arya is still alive?! Well, that's a relief. I just read yesterday that she took an axe to the back of the head.
