How can I control another program using C++?

I'm just wondering is there a way to control another piece of software through C++? I'm familiar with windows programming and understand it to a level where I can send input to a window through the use of the SendMessage() function. But is there another way besides using SendMessage()? Thanks in advance.

I assume you'll be writing both pieces of software?

If so, you could look into using sockets. They are typically used to pass data between two running applications. Check out this tutorial:
