University of Richmond, Oberlin College or University of Kansas?

Posted 07 April 2012 - 10:36 PM

Hi! This is my first topic

My name is Miguel Angel, I live in Peru and I applied to the universities listed in the title (Richmond, Oberlin and Kansas) with the Fulbright asociation in Lima. I also applied to others (University of Gonzaga and Kettering Universities), but I believe those three are the best ones.
I want to major in Computer Science, and I have been accepted at those universities.
I have been reviewing the Computer Science program and departmetns in each of those 3 universities, but I would like to hear opinions about which of those would be best to attend. Which has the best program?
Apparently Richmond is the most selective and recognised of the three, but I think their CS program is not so strong. Kansas is the only one that appears in the top 100 ranking of Computer Science programs..

Anyway, if any of you has some comments that may help me I would really appreciate it.

Greetings from Lima

ps: How is my English? If there is any mistake forgive me, I hope I have no problems in the future

Hi Miguel.

First I should warn that I have no direct knowledge of any of those schools, so this is just based on "common knowledge" and information found on their websites. Richmond is appealing because of its general reputation and proximity to Washington, DC. I think it would be a fine choice if your interests were leaning towards liberal arts or business or law or political science, but if your intention is to major in computer science I think your choice should be U of Kansas. Kansas has a much bigger faculty and far more extensive course offerings in this area than either of the other schools you mentioned. In terms of their CS departments, there's really no contest.

And your English is fine.

Good luck.

Thank you very much! I am still not completely sure about what college I will choose (basically beacuse 90% of it depends on the financial aid package I get), but I will DEFINITELY take that point into consideration, because I want to major in CS and not in other business or political studies.

I'm a little late, but I'm going to start by moving this to Student Campus. I'm from Richmond, so I'm fairly familiar with the University of Richmond. It is a private school, not a public school, so it can be pretty expensive if you don't have a scholarship. Richmond doesn't have a bad CS program. VCU is probably cheaper and has a better CS program though. Still, if you're going to a Virginia school, Virginia Tech is probably your best bet for CS (I'm a little biased though, seeing as I go there).

University of Virginia (UVA) would be the best choice, hands down. One of the best universities in America, highest ranked Virginia school in CS, and has a ton of cash (so there's plenty of financial aid there). There are lots of UVA alumni in top grad schools. It's very selective though.

VTech is still a good choice though. And as far as Richmond goes, I can only say that it's more recognized than the other 2.

I go to Georgia Tech, which has one of the top 10 CS schools in the world right now, but based on the three options you put down, I have to recommend Kansan, seen as it has a CS program in the top 100 and is a public university. That generally means that there is less money available to out-of-country students, but you will want to check the endowments of each school first.
