A career in IT security?

Posted 13 April 2012 - 09:49 AM

I have just got a job offer from a company that specialises in IT security audits, also know as 'ethical hacking' or penn. testing. The role will start off with developing web applications designed for automatic security audits, and assisting penn. testing consultants. The role is expected to then be training me up to become a consultant myself.

Now this sounds like a dream job for me - I've always been interested in computer security, and a penn. tester can get anything up to 60-70k per year with appropriate certs and experience. I could also potentially work from home. Security professionals are in high demand at the moment, and I think they will continue to be.

Does anyone here currently work in IT security, or know much about the industry? I would like to find out whether the job is what I expect it to be. There are negatives I can see, for example, the amount of travel it requires could be a problem - some consultants spend all week on the road visiting various companies, and are only back for the weekend. That isn't very compatible with my life at the moment. I've also been told about the stress and pressure, but I'm guessing that is normal for consulting roles (please correct me if I'm wrong..).

I realise of course that the decision is mine to make, and only I can know whether it would be right for me, but any inside info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Kudos on the gig... try and get around to some of the CEH testing. It's a bit of a bitch.

Yes there's going to be quite a bit of travel.. though if you live in a big enough city maybe not too much. The other thing is you'll need to read... a lot. Start bookmarking all the security feeds and refresh them through out the day.

From what I have seen the stress and pressure comes from a few vectors.. first having to know a whole broad range of crap... After awhile some of that becomes second hand but being able to pull out exploits for apache 1.2 or IIS 3.2 is a bit rough.. the next would be to keep on top of tools... there's lots of tools out there you'll be using.. the other would be, and I've seen good pen.testers fold on this, is you have to be intentionally a bad guy. Lie about who you are to a company's employees, make up massively awkward situations to get five minutes of time next to a pc, and generally gear yourself to exploit all the time. Some people just can't handle this. It happens.

Fun work if you are down for it though.
