Legality of copying information from a Wikia?

Posted 14 April 2012 - 08:13 PM

I'm making a website that will act as a compendium for a video game.

I noticed that a page from Wikia has a ton of useful content such as background stories and trivia for many of the "entities" in the game.

I'm not a lawyer; so what is the legality of copying and pasting the information written there collaboratively by the hivemind, into my website?

Thanks for the help!

I'm no lawyer either, but I would assume as long as you get permission from the wikia beforehand and credit them accordingly, you're good to go. Are you making any kind of money off of this compendium? I'm pretty sure that is a significant factor as well. Even without contacting the wikia, I'd imagine they'd contact you before you'd be in any kind of legal trouble. I may be wrong on this... if so, please correct me.

Mind telling us what game it is for? :)

This link will probably tell you exactly what you need to know about the copywright on WIKI pages.

Sounds like the wikia already serves as something of a compendium for that game. Why not just link to that?

I would think history is history, & you shouldn't need any approval from Wikipedia to retell history.

Thanks for your ideas. I found this link but I'd like to triple check with anybody who might have more experience with licensing content.

Specifically:

Attribution example when re-using Wikia content on your own website:

This article uses material from the "Endor" article on the Star Wars wiki at Wikia and is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License.

Does this mean I can copy the content on my website, and place an attribution block under it and it would be legal and within their terms of use?

Legally, I think that's correct, but if you're really concerned, legal opinions from lawyers are much more useful than legal opinions from The Internet.

In practical terms, it seems to me that anyone who's interested enough in this game to find their way to your site will have already found the wikia, so duplicating massive amounts of their content seems of dubious value to me, but legally I think you can do it.
Legally, I think you could even set up a site that was a straight-up scrape of the wikia and try to use it to generate ad revenue if you wanted, nothing in their license terms seems to forbid that - as long as you put in the required boilerplate.
