I have only joined this community yesterday.
I've tried my utmost to be polite and well mannered. I've read all the rules, and to the best of my knowledge stayed within those guidelines.
Please review all my posts, if I have acted in an offensive manner and contrary to the spirit of DIC; then please to show me the evidence of this.
Now, what has started to disturb me, is this reputation system.
I understand if ones behaviour has been particularly bad, then this should be reflected in some kind of down vote (as per the reputation system).
Being down-voted (negative reputation), without an explanation does not seem fair in my view.
So I'm still holding out hope that this community is not like this and there are some very good reasons for this strange behaviour.
If this post is not in the correct forum, them please do move it to the correct sub forum.
Your views are most welcome.

Damn someone beat me to moving to it to 'site feedback'.
Rep - it's just a number; I wouldn't get too hung up on it. If you have a question on why someone down voted a post of yours or up-voted another you can use the PM system to shoot them a message. That's your option just as it is theirs to respond or not.
Also rep isn't necessarily tied to the rules.

I'm going to move this to Site Feedback so the appropriate type of responses occur. The Lounge is more for offbeat chat and good old fashion internet arguing.
As to the topic at hand, the reputation system exists as a means of self policing. If a "bad" (which is subjective in non programming areas)response is given, members are free to downvote as they see fit. Or upvote in the opposite situation, i.e. a "good" response. While not receiving an explanation can be bothersome, I wouldn't take it to heart as people are generally not out to "get you".
The post in question was rightly downvoted. It's in the C# programming forum and you're offering life advice on tattoos.
This would be acceptable IF it had remained in the Lounge, but there was a 24 hour period (give or take) after it had been moved. In the future please be more cognizant of the forum you are posting in and the desired function of said forum.

Hello KYA,
Thank you for the clarification, although I don't agree with the down voter(s) (but then I'm biased).
I will have to respect there desire to express what they believe to be a negative response.
As you have said your self "bad" is subjective, in my world my response was good (subjective), another deemed it "bad" (subjective).
Perhaps clearer guidelines could help in reduce some of this "subjectiveness"?
However it was strange that I was in turn not able to down vote the responder in that very thread (I have outlined why I believed he's response was not good in that thread).
In my view he's conduct was not necessary. What made less sense, was although I was down voted, yet I was not allowed to down vote others?
Anyway, my confidence is still a little shaken in this community, as I have noticed some rather strange posts. Which to my mind where not positive responses. However perhaps because of their "high" reputation a system of inequality is introduced?

Regardless of any other factors, the topic at the time the post was made was in a programming forum, thus anything not relating to the C# code in question was offtopic and subject to downvotery (yes I just made up an awesome word).
To top it off your response to the response of your original response (everyone got that?) was made a full 24 hours after the topic was in C#. Chalk it up to experience and move on.
edit: Looking more at the topic, it is pretty retarded [he wants to get a tattoo of C# code and wants to make sure it's correct, akin to getting the wrong girl's name on your arm, but I digress] and probably should have remained in the Lounge. Live and learn.

Well I've not noted every single one (as I have chosen to ignore them) but as a random example:
Is this an appropriate behaviour from a forum "leader".
Further the thread in question that as I was down-voted for, I believe the response was both aggressive and derogatory, yet because that individual has a "high" reputation, users seem to have a double standard in judgement.

The only logical way to celebrate a great victory such as this is to masturbate furiously.

Alright one last time:
Lounge = pretty much anything goes/offtopic banter, do not expect professional behavior here. Masturbation may be present.
Programming forums/any other place on site = professional, code related discussion. No masturbation here.

Well your reputation is now back to what it was when you joined.
If you are really worried about your reputation then stick to the pure coding topics and stay away from the Caffeine Lounge

See - kilorn was making a joke there. It's the internet - people can laugh. Additionally it's the lounge.. people do, frequently, make off colored remarks. If it's not your cup of joe the you may want to stay out of it.
What double standard?

ok, that's acceptable and logical.
last question here also, what if any are the restrictions on down-voting? It would appear that I'm unable to do so? (last time I attempted).

New members are limited to 5 up-votes and 0 down-votes per day, I believe. Take it from me, reputation is just a number.
