My background is 6 months... I have developed one site in procedural and one site in OO with PHP. I am also going through a Yii book as well. However, I would like to take a look into RoR as well to be introduced into different web technologies to see if I perhaps prefer RoR over a PHP with a framework. My school is offering a RoR class and I would like the input of this community to see if it is indeed possible to take a RoR class with knowing any Ruby. My thinking is it's just a matter of picking up the syntax correct? Iterations, classes, data types are pretty much all the same in every language isn't it?

I assume you meant "take a RoR class WITHOUT knowing any Ruby" and the answer is, not really since Rails is built out of Ruby. However, I find Ruby not incredibly difficult to pick up. You should be fine. Run through a quick Ruby tutorial online and you will get a feel for the language.
