those Java books must be the annotated specification; nothing should be that big.

Many java books I've seen weigh in at close to 1K pages. That's partly because they're doubling as introductory programming books sor often-unmotivated programmers, and partly because there's more money in selling a big book than a small one.

So they put one concept per page, if that, and lots of pretty pictures and charge you a fortune.

My advice, if you have a book like this assigned, is to get a razor knife and cut it apart at the chapters. The resale value is crap, you'll never look at it again after the class, and your back will thank you for it.
