I just set up a relatively powerful Linux Ubuntu server. It has 2 terabytes of storage, one for the main drive and other is devoted to secondary backups (tar form). My friends and I are going in for our masters in Computer Science. We all graduated from BYU-Idaho in CS. I was thinking about making a site devoted to their studies. Something like Dropbox, were they can perform fast, reliable, file I/O. I also tutor students in Perl, Java, databases, and C++. Perhaps I could let them on board. So many options. Besides that I would like to implement a database to store and serve up all of my files in a relatively user friendly way. What are your thought?

I think you're already on the right track. You've listed a set of problems that may or may not need solutions. If you've got a specific task in mind that you wanted to tackle I'm sure we could guide you in the right direction. Each solution, of course, will depend on your individual needs.

mine-craft server...too shallow?
how powerful is it exactly? could you allow people to SSH into to preform faster computations?

If its to be a server I'd get more storage. This is half what I have on my bedroom computer: 2tb TV shows, 2tb movies, 750gig boot drive.
My household server runs 4x2tb drives for backups: Wife's laptop, my development PC, and so on.
If you're going to have several friends using this server I think you're going to run out of space faster than you think.

SSH capabilities for friends have been enabled. I'll grab more drives. This is based on supply demand. I have already set up a mine craft bukkit server and even linked a gate in it up to my uncle's mine craft server. I'm thinking about perhaps setting up a forum, similar to this one. My university also has an ACM group. hm.. So many options. I just need to find a good team of coders to do the grunt work. Anyone want some disk space?

Create a website that lets people connect with their friends!
Or you could do something cliche...
(in all seriousness, I would make the Dropbox thing)

If he had made it into a minecraft server, he would have taken it back down by now.

Even I'll suggest a minecraft server, you can get some pretty good game in with your server.

Yeah. I reserved approximately 2 gigabytes of RAM just to the running Minecraft bukkit process. Age of Kings was just set up through wine. I'm thinking more on the serious side. Like a site similar to dream.in.code Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Or instead of making a site just like dream.in.code that will get ignored because it is a site just like dream.in.code, you could offer up your server for a serious game of MineCraft so dream.in.code can get a persistent minecraft server.
Or something like that.
