Best way to display text with Directx 11?

What is the best way to create text using directx 11? It seems like there is no straight-forward way of doing it. I was following this tutorial:

and I was able to get it up and running. However, performance goes from 900FPS (our game is still in its infant stages right now) to about 400FPS. On top of that, for about the first 10 seconds or so, FPS is stuck at around 100, before going up to 400.

Is there a better way of displaying text that doesn't have this kind of performance hit?

Your best bet is to use bitmap fonts. Most built in text functions are performance hogs so it is best to write your own text renderer utilising what the API you are using is good at. And one thing DX11 is definitely good at is texturing quads :)
