I haven't heard of anyone offering shares in the project as incentives or anything like that. I think that would be hard to manage, considering you'd probably have to get the SEC involved and whatnot.
Basically, the idea is to get seed money in, not to invest for a financial return.
What might be possible, or it might be completely illegal, and I have no idea which, would be to offer backers early dibs on any IPO that happens out of the project later. However, I think the classic kickstarter campaign is operating at a level where the necessary lawyering to make that happen would cost hundreds of times the campaign's target.
Specifically, I'm thinking, $5K typical startup target and ~$500K in lawyering to make something like that legally solid and legally sound. Not being a lawyer, though, I'm really pulling that out of my ass.

Goddamn it, I was going to give Lamborghinis out as prizes at the 20 dollar level. Now I'll have to go with stickers, admit conformity, and just hope people think that CISPA is as evil as I do.
God damnit.
God damnit.

i have funded 2 projects:
http://www.kickstart...7/the-classical
http://www.kickstart...atue-of-robocop
and one more for a friends site they never reached funding.
i also tried to start a kickstarter to buy the new orleans hornets, of which kickstarter told me was 'inappropriate'
fucking assholes, it's not like anyone would have lost the money if it didn't fund at the 250 million i needed.

LOL
One reason stands out: If the person/group/whatever doesn't reach their funding goal, but can still provide the rewards they have listed, they still get the money. It means they have a chance of succeeding even if the funding isn't what they'd hoped for.
