What flavor of Visual Studio do you use and why?
Posted 02 May 2012 - 07:24 AM
I am half of an IT department of 2 working for a small to mid-sized company. We purchased one seat of MSDN Pro 7.0 back in 2004/05 but have let the subscription lapse. We have used the express versions since they came out, but have a large project coming up and are looking at getting a couple of Visual Studio licenses.
So what level of VS is everyone using? Express, Pro, Pro+test, Premium or Ultimate...
Thanks for yor input...

2010 pro.
Ultimate is, more often than not, a huge waste of money.

2010 Ultimate. Because we wanted the MSDN licenses, and we actually use a few of the features. And we have something like 10 licenses for it.

You should see the licenses the other teams have for all the mainframe software. We're actually one of the lower budget teams.

2010 Pro at home and at the office.
Version control integration is the main reason.

Wow -
Well, we won't likely be using Ultimate, I think we are leaning toward two licenses of Pro +MSDN. Out of curiousity, what are the few features that you use and are they only available in Ultimate or do you receive some of them in Premium as well?
Thanks,

I think he assumes you have the msdn subscription.
@OP - you can just buy the software out right. My home copy is just a purchased copy, got a discount through some promotion a while back. At the office we have the msdn subscription. There's all sorts of options for how you want to get your MS software, your choice on how deals mostly with how it benefits you. An MSDN subscription comes with a bunch of software, as opposed to just one, but needs to be renewed yearly. If you plan to stay on the latest version of multiple pieces of software, it may make sense. This is especially beneficial to a small office... but say for like myself at home, it's just costly.

We only had one seat before and even with Express I have been the one doing most of the programming. But this new project is a rewrite of something my boss wrote way back when and he will be heavily involved and contributing to the code.
I take it "Version Control Integration" is something we will be using as well? Is it fairly straight-forward? My "version control" has been - make a copy of a solution/project in a different folder with the old version number before I make an update...
Thanks,

Yeah you should look at hooking up something like 'team foundation server' (Express version!) or some way of backing up and merging code with your associate.

Well, the options I see on Microsoft's site include either MSDN Essentials or some flavor of MSDN. The MSDN licenses have an option to "renew" which I think means you continue to get whatever MSDN gives you. Are you saying that you use whatever version you have until you feel like upgrading and then buy that new version? From chatting with Microsoft Sales they said they wouldn't give us the "Renew" price because it has been over 18 months (Waaaaaay over) since our MSDN subscription was active. So if we get Pro+MSDN it will cost $1200.00 vs $800.00.
I take it you purchased the Pro which: *** Includes a no-obligation 12-month subscription to MSDN Essentials. See "Before you buy" for details.***
This, being the least expensive option, is very attractive to us. We are just wondering what we will be giving up...

Thanks for the info!
From what I see on Microsoft's Comparison Chart Pro+MSDN gives us a Team Foundation CAL, but Pro (and Express) do not.
Would I need to buy CALs if I use PRo and Team Foundation Server Express ?
