VS 2010 Premium

What features of premium do you use most? Testing? Would it work for us to get one Pro license and one Premium license maybe?

With just two of us we could do the bulk of the testing on one system.

As far as I know TFS:Express is just free to use - much like Visual Studios Express you've been on. doh.. sorry.. TFSExpress will be rolling out with VisualStudio11/windows 8 in October.. I was messing with a beta. So ignore that whole ramble about the freeness of it.

So yeah.. if you guys enjoy bug tracking and all that jazz I would highly recommend TFS.. but there alternatives out there.

we only have 4 programmers and 1 analyst and our programs are used by over 200 in house employees and 100k's vendors. Having said that, we find that the debugging in the premium was a little better than the pro. Other than that there wasnt to many differences in the system that we used. The main reason we got premium was because of the amount of licenses we needed thus we saved money.

Thanks everyone, this has been very helpful.

I think we are probably going to just go with Pro.

Don't forget about the possibility of becoming a Microsoft partner. There are some hoops and rules that apply, but if you become a partner, you can get X number of licenses for free. My previous employer was a Microsoft partner, and we were able to get enough licenses for Visual Studio, SQL Server, and Windows 7 to cover all of the developers we had(which was as high as 8 at one point). I think this included a free MSDN subscription, but I am not certain about that as we never really used it.

More like it give C++ Intellisense back. Intellisense for C++ used to work for VS2008, and was pretty much dead for VS2010.

For those who want Intellisense for C++ in VS2010, but don't want to deal with VS2012 RC uninstall issues when it finally RTMs, you can give Visual Assist by Whole Tomato a try. A friend of mine went from VS2008 to VS2010 and was so frustrated he was ready to go back to VS2008. After the trial period, he gladly bought a copy.

(As for the uninstall issues, all past versions of VS beta's have never uninstalled cleanly for me. Maybe I'm just lucky. I think that DevDiv knows this, because they always had a KB article about how to clean things up after uninstall claims it succeeded but there are still turds left in the system. Additionally, did you notice that on very first few CTPs/Betas for VS2012 they started offering the entire setup running in a VM?)

I'm personally skipping the RC, but that's because the real version should be dropping soon, with Windows 8 RTWing on the 15th.

I use Express, because I am just a game developer. It has all I need: syntax checker, XNA support.
That's pretty much all I need. I don't see the point of spending more money for something I don't need.

Browsed into this one and was wondering what features the msdn subscription you liked I also had this question as to I am struggling between buying the Pro or pro w MSDN?

I used a trial version of ultimate learning so now am I going to see a huge change between ultimate and pro?

2010 professional because premium and ultimate cost too much and the only benefit, imho, are things you can already do in your head or on a white board.
