I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7.

I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7.

The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit intallation DVD can't be read from my OS. Any Advice?

Do I need to boot from that DVD drive? Will that work?

Why can't the dvd be read from the drive? That's a pretty substantial step in the installation process.

I would backup any user data, completely format & install the Windows 7 64bit, & then copy the user data back.

Yes, put your DVD in the drive, restart the computer when it restarts and gives you an option to enter BIOS setup go there and set the first boot device to the DVD drive, save and restart.

You can't run a 64 bit setup program from 32 bit windows.

Pretty much what these guys said. 64 bit programs use an executable extension called msi. While a 64-bit Windows OS can read both exe and msi, a 32-bit is limited to only exe files.

Back your stuff up to a flash/external drive, set your boot sequence, and run the install from boot. It will be an "advanced" install, not an "upgrade".

As a side note, even when I have a customer who wants an upgrade that is manageable with the system up and running, I always do a backup and install from boot. You never know what they have on their system that could potentially mess with the installer package and in worst case scenario corrupt user data and recovery partitions.
