Will the Oracle vs. Google fiasco make you drop Java?

Posted 08 May 2012 - 08:07 AM

Will this despicable behavior by Oracle cause you to drop Java development? I'm just curious as I am not a Java dev. How do you feel about this whole API patent fiasco?

In case anyone wants to avoid having to click through reddit to the article:

The jury in the Oracle vs. Google trial found Google liable of infringing Oracle's Java-related copyrights today, although it remained deadlocked on the critical issue of whether Google made fair use of the Java APIs. The fair use question has been unresolved since Friday, when the jury told Judge William Alsup that it couldn't reach a unanimous decision on the matter. The judge had instructed the jurors at that point to think things through over the weekend in the hopes that they could avoid turning in just a partial verdict, but to no avail.

The jury found that Google had infringed upon Oracle's copyrights by its use of the structure, sequence, and organization (SSO) of the 37 Java APIs utilized in Android. Whether Google's use was covered under fair use — and therefore permissible — was the question they could not agree upon.

Monday's verdict came after the first part of a three-phase trial in which Oracle is seeking more than $1 billion in damages - although without a decision in its favor on the copyright issue, Oracle is unlikely to be awarded anywhere near that amount.

After the jury decision, Judge William Alsup ordered that the second phase of the trial, which involves Oracle's patent claims, begin immediately. Oracle delivered its opening statement to jurors Monday, with Google to make its case Tuesday. The remaining phases are expected to take several weeks.

The trial has been closely watched because an Oracle victory would allow it to ask for royalties on each Android device Google sells, making them more expensive. It could also diminish enthusiasm for manufacturing Android devices among Google's partners, given the multiple patent disputes the operating system has generated. Android is the most dominant mobile software system, running on 300 million smart phones worldwide.

Why would anyone 'drop' Java because of this?

Yeah, not seeing how this would cause me to drop Java.

1) Oracle did not invent the Java language/syntax... so really it doesn't change my opinion of that part of it.

2) There exists 3rd party and open-source implementations of the java runtime, so really I could technically avoid use of Oracle technologies all together rather easily... and actually I do.

I can think of better, technical reasons to not use Java. I don't need to add political reasons.

Um, no. Nor would google's despicable behavior cause me to drop android development, if I were actively working on that right now, or even to migrate off gmail (yet).

Ah, okay. I wasn't sure, because of course Microsoft is involved in plenty of patent bullshittery, and I thought maybe there was a Microsoft connection that I wasn't aware of.

Yes, it would. The only reason that I use Java is for mobile and embedded devices. If Oracle makes it difficult to use Java on these embedded platforms, then I'll simply move to another language. there are tons of gorgeous libraries for embedded, real time systems in both C++ and Python, which are my two other main languages.

Now you just need a bumper sticker that states "My other compiler is a Python interpreter"
