Sending delayed SMS

Posted 08 May 2012 - 04:28 PM

Basically my application will allow charged sms notification system.
My users want to get notified by sms message for a particular event minutes or hours before the event takes place.

I need some guidlines (not code, the steps) on how to send sms at a specific time to the users phone
what is the best/simple solution to do that

thanks

create some object with text and time to send.

Drop those objects into some array/list queue. Optionally sort by time
check every second or 10 each queued message and send if now >= time to send.

To actually send a message you will need some in real service i believe. Not sure tho.

If that's not what you mean then ignore :)

hey Nerfpl
my question was more of a technical one rather than programming
i mean , do i need an sms gateway?
how to create an sms gateway to my server?
what will actually send the sms at that specific hour?

all those kind of questions on how to send sms at a specific time to the users phone

thanks

Well most carriers have a default gateway. Just send an the text message as an email to usersphonenumber@userscarrier.something. Done it in the past and it is simple.

Have the messages queued up in a database with a time in and amount of time to delay. Have a small app, running on a scheduled task, poll all the active messages that have the current time greater than the time in plus the delay.. send the message for all those rows that qualify, and mark the row as 'sent'.

Write a program in your favorite language. Have a list of times and messages you want to send, use a timer or whatever in your language. If the event starts at 2100 and you want the message to go out an hour before, have the timer notify you an hour before and send the message(s) to the users. Really can't get any simpler than that.

Then write it in PHP or some other web language. If it is for your desktop then whatever language you want.
