I Want to be a better programmer

Posted 08 May 2012 - 07:09 PM

Hi,
I am a mom and my kids are young. Currently I develop small apps whether mobile or stand alone for myself or family.I do know C# and trying to learn java. My problem is that since I don't work in a traditional environment yet at the same time I would like to get better programming skills. How can I accomplish that?
I know that practice is the key word but I have read many times that people also learn a lot from more experienced developers.
If someone could guide me or would like to share your experience to get better at coding, would be nice.
Thanks for your input.

I'm not really sure what kind of a response you would be expecting to receive, because words alone can't provide some sort of a shortcut. The only way to really get better at programming is to better understand the languages, & Input Output fundamentals. & the only way to do that is through repetition.

You would want to try sites like Odesk, where they give you programming tasks and pay you for it. You could choose which projects you will take on, then from there try researching on how to finish your project. For example, if someone tasked you to do a simple inventory system in Java, then you'll hit the net and search for the proper libraries and classes to do the job. While you're working, you're learning. Just be sure to finish those projects. ^^

Read books and give yourself programming assignments based on what you learn. Just for practice, I recently wrote a tutorial and 3 snippets, they're still pending though :-\
