Made possible by an internal innovation fund, project Sputnik is a 6 month effort to explore the possibility of creating an open source laptop targeted directly at developers. It is based on Ubuntu 12.04 and Dell’s XPS13 laptop.

Well I'll be damned. This looks really nifty and I wouldn't (*cough cough*) mind if I figured out how to be a guinea pig for this.

You crazy linux users - what's up with the tool set? Does it seem legit? Is there anything else needed? Remember this is for web developers.. the article also has some chatter on 'developer profiles'.

The writer said they are working with dell to address the following issues:

An issue with brightness
The Wifi hotkey
The touchpad and multi touch support

The last one is still being worked on.

Seems like a lot of console tools that todays Linux user isn't going to know exist.

.... No

So basically in a nutshell, it's a dell laptop, preloaded with Ubuntu, a shit ton of developer programs, drivers (which you can already get), and a weird package system to pull more developer programs off github repositories. .... Yeah I'll pass.
