The speed of dreamincode

Posted 12 May 2012 - 03:11 PM

Ive always wanted to post this topic but just never got around to it.
I always dred coming here cause I use dial up internet. Out of all the forums I go to this one is almost 4 times slower.
Its really bad. Although dial up users is rare there are still cell phone users im sure with poor internet.
Plus all the sites i go to have lots of advertising and stuff on them also. Even my homepage www.stargatesystemlords.com runs fast and thats loaded with pictures.

Even while im typing this it still says downloading at the bottom of the browser and its been liek 5 minutes.
sorry for the complaint. I never like giving bad feedback but i do like this forum just wish it was faster and its probably really deflecting users from coming here again.

If you have a DIC++ account all those ads go away.

yah but what im saying is ads shouldnt affect in the issue that im having. I got to sites with 3 to 4 flash ads on a page with no issues. Maybe its the order the ads appear. maybe make them load the page where it doesnt effect the usability of the page. I have no idea why just thought id let the site know how slow it is on dial up.
I notice just hitting submit on a post takes way longer then it should.

I would suggest using a text based browser, or as tlhIn`toq suggested at least getting DIC++ to curb the ads. I really doubt Chris is going to redesign the sight or it's flow because a small percentage of users have old communications technology. You are the first that I've heard of having issues with the speed of the sight.

Yeah, I frequently use my cell phone over 3G and it's perfectly fine in terms of speed. I don't know why yours is so slow.

I just hit reply and it took a minute just to show the screen.

yah 3G is way faster then dial up.

Its vary rare i come to a site that is this slow for no obvious reasons.
We are talking a huge difference.

Like i said i dont mean any offense or anything. Just letting the webmaster aware of it.

one thing i notice
downloading picture http://s0.2mdn.net/v..._touch.pnghasnt finish loading for 10 minutes now. I dont think it ever will finish

my connection isnt even moving. So its like came to a halt. so right there tells you there is some bugs going on. Also it took me 8 months to finally report the problem. Cause the site is so slow that its a huge amount of time just reporting the problem. So they probably just go somewhere else.

If you are stuck on such a slow connection, you could always configure your browser to not load images at all. That should greatly improve load times. You could also use AddOns like FlashBlock and Ghostery, to reduce the amount of bandwidth Flash ads and 3'rd party sniffer scripts are using.

YOu do realize that image isn't on the DIC site, right? It might be something DIC connects with.

There has been a lot of advice about overall speed improvement for your low-bandwidth connection. But I do recognize what you're saying is

Quote

"I have a low speed connection for all my internet, but DIC is disproportionally slower than every other site I go to."

I'm sure the owners of the site are reading that same thing into your statement and do appreciate you letting them know. Ya can't fix something if nobody tells ya it broken.

As part of the diagnostic process though, it would be interesting to see which of all the advices gives makes a difference for you. Does configuring your browser to now show images suddenly clear it up, indicating it is an image coming from a strategic partner causing the issue... Does a DIC++ membership eliminating the ads do it... Does a text based browser clear it up... The browser plugins mentioned... See where I'm going with trying to find the source of the issue?

Using both wired and wireless to broadband, the site IS slow, but it's only a noticible problem on Internet Explorer. The site is satisfactory using Comodo Dragon and Pale Moon.

For what it's worth, I also find the site is painfully slow, even with the ads blocked, both from work and home, and in any browser. I never bother going near it on my mobile - that's just too painful.

It's kinda slow for me too. Maybe some people don't notice it because they live near the server location. Where are the servers from DIC located, by the way?

I have to say that I have noticed the site slow too at times and I believe it is because of DIC using so many third party servers. Just for example the dreamincode.net homepage contacts the following...

1) Netshelter
2) CDNLayer
3) Quantserve (these guys are usually a big bottle neck)
4) Google
5) Widgetserver
6) lqcdn.com
7) Googletagservices.com
8) Smithsonianconferences.org
9) Creditrepairbiz.com
10) Feedburner
11) adnxs.com
12) doubleclick.net
13) googlesyndication.com
14) collective-media.net
15) amgdtg.com
16) serving-sys.com
17) scorecardsearch.com
18) bluekai.com
19) cmcore.com
20) 2mdn.net
21) Facebook
22) crowdscience.com
23) pubmatic.com
24) bizographics.com
25) googleanalytics.com
26) bkrtx.com
27) tacoda.net
28) atwola.com
29) amazonaws.com
30) advertising.com
31) invitemedia.com
32) agkn.com
33) adadvisor.net
34) cloudfront.net
35) abmr.net
36) brilig.com
37) 2 - 3 Dreamincode.net CDNs

and perhaps a few others. The site is filthy with advertising APIs, trackers, etc. It looks like it has even trackers calling trackers etc.

Crazy stuff. ;)

I've often found DIC to be very slow, on multiple computers (all high speed broad band) here in the UK.

I did a quick test on GTMetrix, and the front page alone was 244 HTTP requests + 1.33 MB in size!

the forums are a little better -> 185 HTTP requests and 916KB:

This does require some attention.
