TheNewBoston or Head First C#, what's better ?

Posted 14 May 2012 - 05:39 AM

What would you guys, suggest me, what's better resource to learn C#? TheNewBoston Videos (http://thenewboston.org/list.php?cat=15) or Head First C#? Also any other better book (eBook) than Head First C# ;)?
Wish you good day,
RAiGAR

I suggest you the combination of those two. Start with the book, then when something is not clear, watch the video. Here you can find a quick reference guide for basic C# syntax, this was very helpful to me, you can use it like reminder.

Yes I would say go for Head First. I don't rate TheNewBoston's C# tutorials. I don't think the guy that made them really has a clue what he's doing.

There are three routes people seem to take when learning programming.
  • Just start trying to create programs
  • Start taking apart other programs and try to figure out the language by reverse engineering
  • Follow a guided learning course (school or self-teaching books)

For the life of me I can't figure out why people try 1 & 2.
Sure, 35 years ago the only way I could learn BASIC as a kid was to type programs from a book into a TRS-80 model 1 or Commodore VIC-20, then figure out the commands and syntax by watching the results as the program ran. There simply wasn't any courses for a kid back then.

But now, you can't help but to trip over "Learn {coding language} in 3 weeks" type books and the entire internet is at your disposal for tutorials.

I strongly suggest taking the guided learning approach. Those book authors go in a certain order for a reason: They know what they're doing and they know the best order to learn the materials.

Where do I start?

You start by learning a coding language FIRST.
Learn to plan before you type.
THEN you start designing software with a purpose.

Otherwise, you can just jump to the resources here:
Some of the tutorials below are for C# or Java not C, C++, VB.NET [...]. But the conceptual stuff of classes, object oriented design, events etc. are not language specific and should give you enough guidance in theory of program development for you to be able to look-up specific code example in your chosen coding language.

Wow, I thought this was going to be another pointless thread, and ended up bookmarking it.

Thanks a lot tlhIn, those links really help us beginners.

Moved to "Advanced Discussion", because this is not a help question.

I disagree. His tutorials are by far the best on the internet. Many people use them and continue using them. He might not be able to go into advanced stuff since he covers a lot of different ground, but for beginners he is very good.

Yes he might be very good, but the guy who did the C# tutorials is just not at all. Short from teaching people what an int is, or how to use an if statement, they are inly useful for teaching people bad habits.

That's part of the problem (in my opinion). OK he teaches how to use an if statement, but anything more than that you are going to need something else. A good example of this is good OOP design in the Java tutorials - it's a massive part of the language and it just isn't covered in his tutorials, however its very present in all good Java books.

This is all my opinion however, no need to get your knickers is a twist just because someone disagrees with your opinion.

Why the hell is that relevant?

You expressed your opinion by stating that my opinion was wrong. Kind of goes against the rules of expressing opinion in my opinion.

The head first c# book will leave you high and dry when you get to the lab exercises. The book provides no solution to them, make it very frustrating. You want to see how dumb the new boston tutorials are??? Check out his c# tutorial on delegates, and his Java tutorial on LinkedLists. That says it all.

A good book? C# for dummies, otherwise download visual studio express and go to the learning center.

Let's keep the flaming to a minimum. Negative rep for differing opinions is a little harsh.
