Personally, I have always hated anti-virus software simply because they don't give me enough information and/or control..

I want an anti-virus solution that
A ) When it thinks it has found a virus, notifies me of the incident.
B ) Gives me the details about why IT THINKS it's a virus.
C ) Let's me decide whether I want to try to let it handle the incident itself, or dig deeper into the incident myself.

Does anyone else have this same opinion, or is it just me?

I had contemplated working on such a beast, but I simply haven't yet.

Not really. It is impossible for a Mac to get a virus.

Which antivirus are you running? Those three are pretty standard...

A potential virus is trying to execute or is found on scan.. yup it tells me either in the full app or with a task bar message.
Why it's a virus the various antivirus programs I've used let me right click and 'read more'... or at minimum show me what name they think it is and I just dump that into google.
Every single antivirus program I have used allows me to ignore or skip a file if it is found suspicious.. and then if I do want remove it the 'past log' lets me right click and do so.

We carry Comodo at our shop. It comes with a 500 warranty against infections, comes with remote control assistance, & has the smallest footprint of AntiViruses on the market. I also love that their firewall shows current connections & exe file usage.

I'm mainly talking about heuristic scans. most antivirus software picks up executable as trojans that I have compiled with fast or nasm. quite annoying.

I have a vm on my xenserver with linux on it that I call my 'torrent box' and it auto scans files I download before I push them to my fileserver to access... that's about the only virus scan I have in the house.

I don't even remember the last time I had anti-virus installed on any of my computers. Except my work computer. They make us put Avast on all of our machines.

I find just good internet practices work best.

If I plan to go anywhere shady, I don't do it on my machine I don't want infected with anything. I go out of my way to do it where if anything goes wrong I don't give a crap. So what if my virtual running ubuntu on some separate subnet goes kapoot... delete, reload image, I'm up and running again.


And yes this goes for all my machines, from Windows to Linux to weird no-name systems I run for work (though I highly doubt many viruses exist for them).

It's more along the lines of when I write code that might be ran on other peoples computers.
If I write something in assembly, a lot of popular antivirus solutions detect it as a trojan or virus.
Sure, it gives it a generic name - but I want to know why it thinks that what I wrote is a virus/trojan so I can avoid having to explain to other people that it's not.

I don't personally have virus issues, I don't run antivirus at home either to be honest. Other people do though.

i mean, i would never tell my parents or sister or girlfriend to go without an anti-virus, NEVER. but i'm with LoD, i know my way around enough and know when I'm doing something risky and when i'm not. i don't walk around with a condom on, i put it on when it's appropriate.

Well, this issue I have mainly applies to when MY code is detected as some generic trojan/virus.
It tends to happen a lot whenever I write something in assembly, and it annoys me to no end.

I don't run antivirus software at home either, but other people do - and I'd like to know exact details as to why it thinks MY code is a trojan/virus.

It's probably another useless rant, but I wanted to see if anyone else felt the same way.

Not many people coding in assembly these days anyway :-/
