My wife and I are planning on starting a business reselling American snacks overseas, where we live, targeted towards French people who love American snacks (like my wife) and homesick American expatriates (like me). Here's our problem:
The current name that we are working with is:
Envie d'USA (which would of course become enviedusa.com)
Translated it means something similar to Craving USA.
We've also talked about using Craving USA (cravingusa.com)
However, I worry that these names aren't immediately accessible and obvious; I'd like to have the domain name be much more obvious in relation to what we plan to do. For example, the first page of Google results returns:
-americansweets.co.uk
-homesickamerican.com
-usafoodstore.co.uk
-usafoods.com.au
-usafoodz.co.uk
-american-trading.com
-americanfood4u.com
-myamericanmarket.com
It seems like it would behoove us to have a VERY obvious domain name in this arena. However, it seems that pretty much every combination of the obvious things I can think of has been registered.
I'm hoping that someone here can suggest a good domain name, from which it is immediately obvious what we do. What are your suggestions, or thoughts on the current domains we're considering?

Quite a few of the .fr domains are open...
USAFOODS.FR
Usa-Foods.fr
AmericanFoods.fr
AmericaFoods.fr
heck.. even USAFoods.com is available.. just for a bit more than your usual yearly domain cost.

Very true, and we've looked into getting a .fr due to the much broader availability of names - unfortunately .fr domains have to be registered through specific registrars and many hosts, such as bluehost (who I'd like to go with), can't be pointed to with an .fr domain.

Ultimately our nameservers do not allow Zone Transfers on TCP Port 53 due to security reasons. AFNIC (the sole registrar of .fr domains) requires a nameserver query (via TCP port 53) prior to pointing the nameservers. This is an unfortunate situation which is unique to AFNIC. Other registrars are fully able to query our nameservers on TCP port 43 (the ICANN required port).
So we've decided it would be best to try and find something in the .com tld.
And yeah, usafoods.com is a tad bit more than we can afford to shell out on a domain.

Then I suggest just picking through godaddy.. their suggested names (assuming the one you searched is taken) range from "wow that's nifty!" to "damn that's absurd!".

It seems like there is already alot of people doing this. I can see one thing you are trying to do to set yourself apart is use a very clear and concise domain name. So why would you compromise that by not using .fr if you have better availability with that top-level domain?
I pulled this up in a quick search, could help you:
