Need backing for Color Trends

Posted 14 May 2007 - 08:21 AM

Alright, so I designed a logo for a radio station and have kind of an electric blue going. They want to use Navy Blue for it, but I'm somewhat convinced Navy Blue is "totally five years ago". Can anyone give me some backing or a source why I might have this inclination? That or I'm off my rocker. I mean, it depends on how you are using the color, but it just seems un-trendy at the moment.

Here's my current color selection:

I'm with you on this, your graphic abilities continually astound me.
The colour difference i think is about right, thus if you make the blue -> navy blue, you would have to make the 102 darker, which would completely eliminate the effect of the texturing.
Perhaps it could be a little darker, but i wouldn't go as far as navy.

Stop being trendy Nick, a darker blue would look just as good as your lovely baby blue.

However, the "102" wouldn't pop nearly as nicely with a darker blue, I really like how that looks.

Ok, I won the color vote. For all you, however, I'll show you what I was up against (Also, I have greyscale compatibility in the examples shown)

FUNNN. I ended up writing them a 1-2 page e-mail on my reasons for my blue.

Your colour selection is much better.

I have an issue with the top type... because you have the point between 2 and 5 the rest seems misplaced. I'd suggest bringing 102.5 together a bit more and then separating that from fm.

second thing, and although I'm being picky here :P, but i'm kinda getting a weird bezier moment on the bottom of the Q. It may be just an illusion I'm getting from the texture of the Q but it seems like there is a point sticking out... as if it's not a smooth bezier curve... but as I said, picky.

overall, i like it.. especially with your colours.

yeah, the 102.5 has been a controversial deal since the beginning. I'd like to come up with something entirely different for the top and bottom captions, font and all. But I must settle in order to keep them pleased. Also, there is a point sticking out on the Q, but that's the font, and they really really like that font. I don't know if it's supposed to look like a marker or what. AIM: nickcdavis we can talk further. heh heh.

Trillian or Gaim?
(For me Gaim was a miserable failure, it just kept crashing)

Ok, I've been a designer about 15 years now.
1. The navy causes "102" to lose contrast. That should be your biggest point in selling them on the lighter blue. A logo should work just as well in black and white as it does in color. dark grey and navy won't give you enough contrast to define the two characters.
2. The lighter blue is reminiscent of a glowing radio dial, thus a much better choice

In fact, I'd be inclined to swap the two. Make the 102 in blue and the Q in grey, and may even try a glowing type effect on the 102 to make it stand out from the Q more, especially whan it's in black and white.

I think what Tyler is trying to say is thanks for replying, that's good feedback, but it may be a little late since the original post was about 5 months ago. We do however look forward to you sharing your experience in the future.

Glad you came back to dream.in.code! Don't let Tyler discourage you from posting in the future.

I didn't even notice the date, just that it was near the top of the forum.

Thanks for the welcome.
