so.cl - looks pretty interesting..

Posted 22 May 2012 - 12:56 PM

Microsoft Research's So.cl
Hmm.. it looks part of the UI promised to me by the Courier (I mournz it; still).. An interesting bend on less of the shameless self promotion and more of a creative aspect of social sites. Their main page is blocked by work but their boards link below looks fun.

Has anyone used this, tested it, or looked into it more than my twenty minutes?

So.cl, an experimental research project from Microsoft that combines social networking and search to promote learning, is now accepting all users interested in joining the site.

The social networking site, pronounced "social," is however not positioned to replace existing full-featured search and social networking tools, and uses a minimal set of features, Microsoft said on the So.cl website.

Besides providing sharing of media including real-time sharing of videos through "video parties", So.cl also helps users create "rich posts," by assembling montages of visual web content.

So.cl uses Bing for search data via the public API (application programming interface), but is not a Bing product, Microsoft said in a FAQ on the So.cl website.

It uses Facebook authentication, but by default does not post any content from So.cl into the user's Facebook stream, Microsoft said. Unless marked as private, search results, and any other data posted to So.cl can be viewed by all other So.cl users.

Damnit. Why can't Sodium be abbreviated So. Then I could make a chemistry joke.

What Jon, you don't like text-speak spelling conventions entering common usage by companies now?

No, I don't, and this isn't even a text-speak convention. It's just some marketing twit who lost control of his vowels.

Soooo... This is Reddit, re-done by Microsoft, and it's connected to Bing only in unofficial (unregulated) ways?

I don't see how this is all that different from something that already exists. I really believe Microsoft needs to rethink what they're going to do. Windows Phone didn't work, IE just got reportedly overtaken by Chrome, and I don't think this will be successful.

Microsoft's language development has been fairly decent in recent years. However, most of their developments only support the Windows platform and its derivatives. Meanwhile, most major competitors to M$ lang's are supported on every other major platform including windoes.

C# is a modern language and most people who work with it seem to be happy about it. Although, if M$ were shoving a different language technology down M$ developer's throats then I'm sure they'd all be circlejerking that environment instead.

Microsoft needs to broaden its language horizons and support more platforms. It also never made sense to me to charge developers money so that they would develop software for your platform. Why do you charge people to bring business to your doorstep?

Says who? It has had a slow start, but it's moving forward now that they're putting out decent hardware, like the Lumia 900 (I have one, and I have to say, it kicks ass). Android had a slow start too, and shitty phones at first, but they took off. Don't count them out just yet.
